There’s more information about why FuboTV users were unable to stream Wednesday’s World Cup semifinal match between France and Morocco.
In a statement shared on the company’s website, FuboTV co-founder and CEO David Gandler confirmed that “yesterday’s incident was not related to any bandwidth issues on Fubo’s part” and that the streaming service instead was “the target of a criminal cyber attack.”
Per Emma Roth of The Verge, an outage caused FuboTV subscribers looking to stream Wednesday’s World Cup semifinal live to miss the entire game that France won 2-0 to book a spot in the final against Argentina. Those two countries will face off on Sunday.
“Apologies to customers who are having issues with the France vs Morocco game. We are addressing the issue,” FuboTV said in a statement released during the contest. Fubo also pointed out that subscribers could stream the match directly via Fox.
Jay Rigdon of Awful Announcing mentioned that YouTube TV customers experienced a service interruption during the 2018 World Cup semifinal showdown involving Croatia and England. YouTube TV eventually offered a free week of service as a make-good, but Gandler mentioned nothing about a similar gesture in Thursday’s release.
“We have reported the incident to law enforcement and have engaged Mandiant, an industry-leading incident response firm, to assist with our continuing investigation and response,” Gandler added. “Our primary focus currently is on ensuring that the incident is fully contained and that there is no threat of further disruption for any of our customers.”
That’s all well and good, but it does nothing for those who weren’t able to watch France defeat Morocco as the game happened.
Gandler vowed that FuboTV “will provide an update at an appropriate time when we have more information to share.”
