Ireland has pledged €15 million ($16.3 million) to Brazil’s Amazon Fund, a key initiative aimed at halting deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. The donation, which will be spread over three years, strengthens global efforts to preserve the world’s largest tropical rainforest and supports sustainable development practices.

With this contribution, Ireland becomes the eighth nation to back the fund, joining other major donors such as Norway, Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The fund, managed by Brazil’s development bank, has already supported 123 projects with investments totaling $534.6 million, focusing on deforestation prevention, environmental monitoring, and reforestation efforts.

Brazil’s Environment Minister, Marina Silva, emphasized the critical role the Amazon Fund plays in combating illegal logging and promoting sustainable land use. During a meeting in São Paulo, Silva highlighted that the fund is central to Brazil’s environmental strategy.

“Ireland’s donation underscores the importance of international cooperation in preserving the Amazon, which is vital for global climate stability and biodiversity,” said Brazil’s Environment Ministry.

This announcement comes as international recognition grows of the Amazon’s role as a critical carbon sink, reinforcing the urgency of collective global action to protect it.
