The Gender Pay Gap is (Slowly) Decreasing Across the European Union

World

Slow progress is still progress. And the gender pay gap is a complex problem. It’s rarely about one boss paying one woman less.

Women are concentrated in lower-paid sectors, take on more part-time work and still face unequal career progression and discrimination, as importantly, unpaid care, and often see their earnings stall after having children.

Change is coming from every angle. Better parental leave for fathers. Flexible working. New EU rules forcing companies to reveal pay gaps and explain them.

The results still vary dramatically between countries. The average gap has fallen to 11% – still unacceptable. Some countries like Luxembourg and Belgium are close to zero. Others are following. Not fast. But forward.
