Statement by Tánaiste Simon Harris on the Kidnapping of Irish Citizen Gena Heraty and Colleagues in Haiti

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Harris TD, has issued an update regarding the ongoing efforts to secure the release of Irish citizen Gena Heraty, who was abducted in Haiti alongside seven colleagues and a three-year-old child.

Speaking on the matter, the Tánaiste stated:

“Intensive and sustained efforts are underway to secure the safe release of Gena and the other hostages currently held in Haiti. This case remains highly sensitive and is being actively managed by dedicated teams across Dublin, Washington, and London.”

He confirmed that he and his officials have maintained close contact with Ms Heraty’s family throughout the day and are liaising with local Haitian authorities and the humanitarian organisation Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs, with which Ms Heraty is affiliated.

“I want to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to doing everything possible to ensure the safe return of Gena, her colleagues, and the child involved in this distressing situation,” he added.

Tánaiste Harris paid tribute to Ms Heraty’s decades-long humanitarian service in Haiti, describing her as “a courageous and compassionate individual who has devoted her life to supporting vulnerable communities.”

He concluded by emphasising the Government’s continued focus on the safety and welfare of Irish citizens abroad and assured that further updates will be provided as developments occur.
