Departure of Assistant Secretary Ramin Toloui

Business

As Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs, Ramin championed a guiding principle of our foreign policy: that economic security is national security. Through his leadership, the Department has cultivated resilient semiconductor supply chains under the CHIPS Act, protected critical technologies like artificial intelligence by shaping outbound investment regulations, and imposed costs on Russia for its illegal invasion of Ukraine. He has coordinated with allies and partners to strengthen global supply chains, align investment policies, and counter coercion by hostile actors.

Ramin has guided the Department’s engagement in the G20, deepened partnerships with U.S. businesses and workers, and advanced key initiatives to enhance global food security. As he prepares to depart the Department in June, I thank Ramin for his exceptional service. On behalf of the Department, I wish him well as he returns to Stanford University later this summer.
