Bamako, Mali — August 17, 2025
A French national recently detained in Mali has been confirmed as a member of the French embassy in Bamako, according to a statement issued by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
The arrest, which took place earlier this week, has sparked diplomatic concern between Paris and Bamako. In its official communication to Reuters on Saturday, the French foreign office firmly rejected the allegations leveled against the individual, describing them as “unfounded.”
“The person in question is a member of our diplomatic mission in Bamako. The accusations brought against him are without basis,” the ministry stated.
French authorities have called for the immediate release of the diplomat and emphasized the importance of respecting international conventions governing diplomatic relations, including the Vienna Convention, which grants immunity to accredited embassy personnel.
The Malian government has not yet issued a formal response or disclosed the nature of the accusations. The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Mali and several Western nations, following recent shifts in the country’s foreign policy and security partnerships.
The French embassy in Bamako remains operational, and officials in Paris have reiterated their commitment to maintaining diplomatic dialogue with Malian authorities.
