Kyiv, August 12, 2025 — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a pivotal conversation with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, expressing deep gratitude for Qatar’s humanitarian role in securing the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia during the ongoing conflict.
In his nightly video address, Zelensky praised Qatar’s “extraordinary mediation efforts,” which have led to the successful repatriation of hundreds of children. He also shared updates on Ukraine’s diplomatic engagements and outlined potential next steps in coordination with international partners.
“Thanks to Qatar’s mediation, we have been able to bring home many of our children who were illegally deported to Russia. We deeply value this humanity and assistance,” Zelensky wrote on Facebook.
🤝 Humanitarian Diplomacy and Peacebuilding
The leaders discussed broader diplomatic strategies aimed at ending the war, with Zelensky emphasizing that a ceasefire must precede any meaningful negotiations. He welcomed the Emir’s principled stance that Ukraine must be directly involved in any talks concerning its future.
“A ceasefire must be the first step. Only then can the right foundation for diplomacy be established,” Zelensky stated. “I appreciate the Amir’s position that any meetings concerning Ukraine cannot be decided without our country’s participation”.
Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s openness to participating in any format of peace talks that uphold integrity and transparency. The two leaders agreed to maintain close contact and continue coordinating with global partners to advance peace efforts.
🌍 Qatar’s Role in Child Repatriation
Since 2023, Qatar has played a critical role in facilitating the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia and occupied territories. These efforts have been widely acknowledged by Kyiv and international organizations, especially in light of the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over the unlawful deportation of children.
Zelensky’s outreach to Qatar underscores Ukraine’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy and humanitarian justice, as well as the importance of inclusive peace negotiations that respect national sovereignty.
