New measures include one-year path to permanency and streamlined registration for overseas-qualified teachers

Minister for Education Helen McEntee has announced new measures to address teacher supply challenges in Ireland. Starting in September 2025, newly qualified teachers employed in full-time teaching positions will be eligible for permanent contracts by September 2026, contingent upon successful re-appointment through a competitive recruitment process. Additionally, the Teaching Council will streamline the registration process for eligible teachers who qualified outside of Ireland, allowing them to apply for registration and complete their induction requirements within the country. These initiatives aim to enhance job security and attract qualified teachers to the Irish education system.

Minister McEntee emphasized the importance of these measures in providing teachers with stability and support, particularly in securing mortgages and establishing long-term careers. She also expressed a commitment to introducing further initiatives in the coming months to address teacher supply and ensure a high-quality education system for all students in Ireland.
