Why Bills GM does not want to go all-in for one year

The Buffalo Bills have been a Super Bowl contender for the past four years and general manager Brandon Beane wants to make sure they remain one on a yearly basis.

That is why he is hesitant to go “all-in” for one season and sacrifice his team’s future assets or salary cap situation.

Beane talked about that during an interview with Jim Rome and said he and his staff have been very diligent to avoid having to tear their team down in the future.

Via the Buffalo News:

“There are some moves that we could do that would say we’re all in for this year and then have a teardown. We’ve been diligent with the cap to try to avoid that type of situation. “It’s not easy, especially when you have a top 10 quarterback, great receiver, Tre White, Von (Miller) and some of these guys. Ultimately, we think we’ve got a plan to continue to go for it year after year and hopefully, we can find a way to pull that title home for Buffalo sooner rather than later.”

The Los Angeles Rams are an example of a team that went all in on trying to win in one season, sacrificing years of premium draft picks and clogging up their future salary-cap situation. They are paying the piper for that now with a roster that has been depleted and was one of the worst in the NFL a year ago.

The upside, though, is that they won a Super Bowl and banners hang forever. The Bills are still looking for that first championship. Would Bills fans take a couple of down years if it meant that a long-suffering fan base got to experience a championship season? They probably would.

The Rams are an extreme example, though, and not every championship team has to take the all-in approach for one year. Kansas City, for example, has managed to maintain a Super Bowl-caliber team for an extended period of time without really showing any sign of slowing down.

Having a franchise quarterback is a part of that sustained success. But having that quarterback signed to a below-market contract also helps. The Bills do not really have that advantage with Josh Allen as he remains one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

It is going to take some creativity when you have so much money invested in one player. The Bills’ window is still open, but they may have already missed their best chance. At some point, they might have to make the decision to go all in before it is too late.
