Humanity has permanently eradicated a disease just twice in history – smallpox in the middle of the 20th century, and rinderpest (an agricultural disease affecting cattle) in the early 21st century. But polio is likely to be the third.
Today, the disease exists in the wild in just two countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan.
