Tragic Discovery in Libya: 28 Migrant Bodies Found in Mass Grave while 76 Freed

World

In a grim discovery on Sunday, Libyan authorities recovered 28 bodies of migrants from a mass grave in the southeast desert, north of Kufra city, according to the Libyan Attorney General. The bodies are believed to belong to migrants attempting to make their way through Libya in search of better opportunities, with 76 individuals reportedly freed from forced detention during the operation.

This tragic find follows a similar recovery of 19 bodies from another mass grave in the Jikharra area on Thursday. In a separate incident, the Libyan Red Crescent recovered the remains of 10 more migrants off the coast of Zawiya after their boat sank. These deaths are a stark reminder of the perilous journey many migrants face as they attempt to cross through Libya to reach Europe, often risking their lives in overcrowded boats and harsh desert conditions.

Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, situation in Libya deteriorated rapidly and it has become a major transit hub for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa. However, the country’s instability, coupled with ongoing human trafficking and violence, has made the journey even more deadly.
