Young, charismatic, progressive, and at the same time deeply rooted in the Christian faith. Texan James Talarico is a rare combination within the Democratic Party. Yet this is exactly what convinces many people who are not core Democratic voters. The young preacher is running for the U.S. Senate and could help stop the increasingly fascist policies of Donald Trump.
James Talarico grows up in San Antonio. His mother raises him on her own after separating from his violent and alcohol-dependent father. Later, she marries Mark Talarico, who adopts James.
His upbringing is strongly shaped by the Christian faith. His grandfather is a Baptist preacher. Unlike many Christians in Texas, however, Talarico’s grandfather does not hold a conservative interpretation of faith but instead places service to others at its center. The hardships of his childhood and his family’s faith later shape Talarico’s politics.
Talarico the teacher and preacher
After graduating from high school, Talarico studies political science in Austin and then works as a teacher in one of the poorest areas of his hometown. After several years in education, he completes a master’s degree in education at Harvard University. However, this is not the end of his educational path: he follows in his grandfather’s footsteps and trains to become a preacher.
Talarico’s path into politics
As a Democrat, Talarico wins election to the Texas House of Representatives in 2018, defeating Republican Cynthia Flores. The Texas House of Representatives can be compared to a state parliament in Austria or Germany. At the age of 28, he becomes the youngest member and is re-elected three times.
He takes the next step in 2025: he runs for the office of U.S. Senator from Texas. In the Democratic primary, he must defeat Jasmine Crockett. At the time, Crockett is already a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, much better known than Talarico, and has the support of prominent party figures such as former Vice President Kamala Harris.
At the start of his campaign, Talarico is known to only a few voters. Nevertheless, he clearly prevails over the more established candidate. There are three main reasons for this: his progressive political demands, his refusal to accept money from large corporations, and his approachable, authentic demeanor.
Love of neighbor instead of Christian nationalism
Talarico says that his Christian faith and commitment to others motivated him to enter politics. For him, politics is “another word for how you treat your neighbors.”
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31)
Talarico advocates for ensuring that all people have access to education, healthcare, and security—regardless of their income, background, or religious and philosophical beliefs. In his work in Texas, he has helped make medications, especially insulin, significantly cheaper (from $684 to $25) and enabled young inmates to complete their education.
At the same time, he advocates for the safety of migrants in the United States and criticizes Trump for violent enforcement actions and deportations carried out by the immigration authority ICE.
This understanding of Christian faith stands in contrast to what Talarico describes as “Christian nationalism.” For him, it is “the worship of power—social, economic, and political power—in the name of Christ.” He says Christian nationalists have “turned Jesus into a gun-carrying, anti-gay, anti-science, money-loving, fearmongering fascist.”
According to Talarico, powerful Republican politicians such as President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, or Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth misuse the Christian faith to advance their own power interests. Hegseth, for example, has described the war against Iran as a “holy war.”
Fighting the gap between rich and poor
The gap between the wealthiest Americans and the rest of the population has grown larger in recent years. Today, the richest 1 percent owns one-third of total wealth, while the poorer half owns only about 3 percent combined. More and more people in the United States can no longer afford basic food, heat their homes, or pay for necessary medication. At the same time, billionaires are flying into space for leisure.

Talarico wants to change that. He aims to tax the wealthiest more heavily and use the revenue to support low-income families as well as to build a strong public healthcare and education system.
No money from corporations
Unlike many politicians in the United States, Talarico does not accept donations from corporations but instead builds his campaign on small individual contributions.
He makes this decision to avoid falling under the influence of large companies. Even progressive candidates like his primary opponent Jasmine Crockett have accepted donations from major corporations.
Dialogue instead of harsh rhetoric and personal attacks
In the United States, as in many other countries, conflict between political camps has intensified, and political discourse has become harsher. This is particularly evident in the attacks by former President Trump on his political opponents.

Talarico strikes a different tone in political debate: he is calm and composed, speaking of reconciliation and love of neighbor instead of hatred and war.
However, this does not mean that he waters down or hides his political positions. He represents them clearly and firmly without resorting to tirades or personal attacks.
This style is a welcome change in Trump’s America. Many people see politicians like Talarico as a chance for a fairer and more connected country. This is also why he regularly publishes viral videos on social media and reaches millions of people. Talarico received particular attention when he was invited onto Joe Rogan’s podcast, the most successful podcast in the world. Rogan was so impressed that he encouraged Talarico to run for president.
Hope for Democrats, nightmare for Trump
Through his policies and demeanor, the young Democrat has a good chance of becoming the new senator of a traditionally Republican state. In current polls, he is ahead of his Republican competitors. He performs particularly well among undecided voters and disappointed Republicans. A Talarico victory would be crucial for a Democratic majority in the Senate and could help stop Trump’s policies.
Concern among Trump supporters appears to be significant: they attempted to prevent Talarico’s appearance on a well-known talk show. However, the host was not swayed, and Talarico appeared anyway. Although the program was not broadcast on television, the interview received significant attention online—on YouTube, it was viewed by more than 9 million people.
