Texans interested in signing Jimmy Garoppolo?

There is a push within the Houston Texans organization to sign impending free-agent QB Jimmy Garoppolo, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported.

In addition to starting for Houston, the nine-year NFL veteran could mentor a young quarterback. With the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Texans are expected to select a QB.

Davis Mills, last season’s starter, finished 2022 with the third-worst QBR rating.

With the emergence of Brock Purdy and Trey Lance, it’s likely that Jimmy G’s time in the Bay Area is over.

It would make sense for Garoppolo to sign with the Texans. He has ties with multiple coaches, including offensive coordinator Bobby Slovick.

Before joining the Texans in February, Slovick was a part of the 49ers’ offensive staff from 2019-22. He’s familiar with Garoppolo’s style of play.

Since the hiring of head coach DeMeco Ryans, a former Niners defensive coordinator, the Texans have added former San Francisco staff members Cory Undlin, Stephen Adegoke and Nick Kray to their staff.

Last September, Garoppolo took over a 49ers offense that had lost Trey Lance to a season-ending ankle injury. The 31-year-old produced a 7-3 record as a starter, but he suffered a season-ending broken foot against Miami in Week 13.

Garoppolo, who has played in San Francisco since 2017, will become a free agent when the new league year begins on March 15.
