Taoiseach Micheál Martin has begun an official visit to Johannesburg, South Africa, ahead of Ireland’s first-ever participation in the G20 Leaders’ Summit, marking a significant milestone in the country’s global engagement.
Economic and Community Engagement
On Friday, Martin attended an Enterprise Ireland lunch with around 150 business leaders, highlighting opportunities for Irish companies in Africa. Later, he joined the Global Citizens Now event alongside South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, participating in a fireside chat to conclude the year-long Scaling Up Renewables in Africa campaign.
Global Fund Commitment
The Taoiseach also addressed the Eighth Replenishment Summit of the Global Fund, co-hosted by South Africa and the UK. He reaffirmed Ireland’s support for the Fund, which channels international aid to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, underscoring Ireland’s commitment to global health.
Promoting Irish Culture Abroad
In the evening, Martin attended a Bord Bia event promoting Irish whiskey and later addressed an Irish Community Reception, strengthening cultural and diaspora ties during the visit.
G20 Summit Participation
On November 22, Martin will join fellow leaders at the G20 Summit, where he is scheduled to speak during sessions on inclusive and sustainable economic growth and global resilience. He will also attend the Leaders’ Dinner and hold bilateral meetings with counterparts. The summit concludes on November 23, with Ireland’s participation seen as a major step in elevating its international profile.
Taoiseach’s Remarks
Speaking ahead of the summit, Martin said:
“It is a tremendous honour that Ireland has been invited to participate in the G20 for the first time in its history. Our attendance reflects months of work across Government to make a positive contribution to the G20’s agenda, particularly on sustainable growth and ensuring no one is left behind.”
He added that the visit also provides an opportunity to strengthen Ireland’s relationship with South Africa, reinforcing Ireland’s commitment to multilateralism and global cooperation.
