Tánaiste Micheál Martin Reaffirms Ireland’s Continued Support for Ukraine Amid Ongoing Russian Aggression

As the new year begins, Ukraine finds itself enduring its third consecutive winter under the shadow of Russia’s devastating invasion. The ongoing conflict has forced millions of Ukrainians to flee their homes, with many displaced internally as they face brutal conditions. Despite the harsh winter temperatures, Russian forces continue to target civilian infrastructure, including the energy grid, further exacerbating the suffering of the Ukrainian people. In particular, the bombings on Christmas Day have drawn widespread condemnation.

Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) of Ireland, in a statement issued at the start of 2025, reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty and territorial integrity. He condemned Russia’s aggressive actions and highlighted the severe human rights violations being perpetrated, including the forced deportation of civilians, mistreatment of prisoners of war, and repression in occupied Ukrainian territories.

The Tánaiste emphasized the need for the international community to maintain steadfast support for Ukraine. He pointed out that Ireland has contributed significantly to humanitarian efforts, committing an additional €36 million in 2024 to provide essential aid. This funding is being used for shelter, cash assistance, and winterisation activities, while also helping Ukraine with its long-term recovery, including rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. Ireland has also extended a welcoming hand to those displaced by the war, offering refuge to Ukrainians who have sought asylum in Ireland.

In September 2024, Ireland and Ukraine strengthened their bilateral relations with the signing of a comprehensive agreement that underscores Ireland’s support for Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. This agreement, both political and practical in nature, sends a clear message of Ireland’s commitment to defending the sovereignty of Ukraine and upholding the principles of a rules-based international order.

The Tánaiste also acknowledged the broader significance of Ukraine’s struggle. “By defending their nation, Ukrainians are also defending the core values of European freedom,” he said, emphasizing that a Russian victory would not only jeopardize Ukraine but also pose a grave threat to European security and the international values that Ireland and the EU stand for. He called on international partners to continue working together to support Ukraine and work toward a just and lasting peace.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Tánaiste concluded with a message of solidarity, pledging that Ireland will remain a steadfast ally to Ukraine, both now and in the future. “We will not waver in the face of Russia’s aggression,” he affirmed, highlighting the importance of standing firm in defense of peace, sovereignty, and human rights.
