Switzerland Ready to Host Trump-Putin Talks to Facilitate Ukraine Peace Efforts

World

Switzerland has expressed its willingness to facilitate a high-level meeting between U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the conflict in Ukraine. Nicolas Bideau, head of communications at the Swiss Foreign Ministry, confirmed the offer in an interview with the Swiss daily Le Temps.

Bideau pointed to Switzerland’s long-standing diplomatic role, citing its involvement in the Bürgenstock peace summit held in June, which brought together representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. He reiterated Switzerland’s commitment to supporting peace efforts and engaging all parties in dialogue to resolve the crisis.

This announcement follows recent signals from Moscow indicating an openness to direct negotiations with Trump after his inauguration on January 20. While both sides have shown interest in a potential meeting, no official plans or dates have been finalized.

Switzerland’s offer to host talks reflects its neutral stance in international diplomacy and its history of serving as a mediator in global conflicts, including the facilitation of past peace negotiations. The possibility of a Trump-Putin summit could play a significant role in efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.
