OG Anunoby out with injury as Raptors brace for trade deadline

Sports

NBA scouts are following the Raptors on their road trip. They won’t be able to scout the team’s biggest prize until they’re back in Canada.

OG Anunoby injured his wrist in a scary fall during Friday night’s loss to the Golden State Warriors.

While Gary Trent Jr. and Fred VanVleet can become free agents at the end of this season, Anunoby has garnered the most attention in trade rumors. He’s also likely to bring back the biggest return as a premium wing defender signed through 2024. With Toronto mired in 12th place in the Eastern Conference, there’s growing belief the Raptors make a move ahead of next week’s trade deadline.

Team president Masai Ujiri and top Raptors staff have been at the games on Toronto’s road trip, contributing to the idea they’re working on moves. Ujiri even appeared to duck into a tunnel to talk with Phoenix Suns GM James Jones Monday night.

Now the Raptors and potential trade partners have to hope Anunoby’s wrist is OK. Coach Nick Nurse didn’t expect the sprained wrist to keep him out until the Raptors’ next home game, Feb. 8 – the day before the deadline.

Anunoby has drawn interest. Now, possible suitors like the Suns, Utah Jazz and the Memphis Grizzlies won’t have had a chance to be impressed by Anunoby in person.
