SYDNEY — At least 120 office-based engineers at Qantas have staged industrial action following an ongoing deadlock with the Australian national carrier over salary increases.
Represented by the union Professionals Australia, the specialized workforce initiated a two-hour work stoppage alongside a protest demonstration outside Qantas’s corporate headquarters in Mascot, Sydney.
Scope of the Action and Maintenance Bans
The industrial dispute centers on professional and technical engineers responsible for crucial operational oversight, fleet compliance, and maintenance management across Qantas’s long-haul fleet.
As part of the protected industrial action, participating engineers implemented work bans targeting key widebody aircraft:
- Fleet Coverage: The action directly impacts maintenance management and technical support for long-haul aircraft, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A380 fleets.
- Maintenance Halts: Union officials confirmed that any long-haul aircraft scheduled for maintenance during the active work bans will remain grounded and off operational status until the industrial restrictions conclude.
Inflationary Pressures and Pay Demands
The union stated that negotiations have dragged on without progress, leaving members with stagnant wage growth that fails to reflect rising inflation and living costs.
Professionals Australia lead organizer Jonathan Farry stated that the workforce is seeking a pay structure that allows employees to catch up with past inflationary impacts and aligns with market standards across the aerospace and aviation sectors.
“If any of these planes are in maintenance at the time that bans start, they will not be getting flown while bans continue,” Farry stated, stressing that the specialized skills of the technical workforce are essential to keeping the carrier’s international operations running.
Airline Response and Operational Status
Qantas management expressed disappointment over the work stoppage, describing the industrial action as unnecessary.
The airline maintained that its current financial proposals remain fair and competitive while ensuring economic sustainability across its business operations. Qantas representatives added that contingency protocols were activated to minimize immediate flight disruptions and limit broader impacts on international passenger schedules.
