NFL Week 14 fantasy: Surprises, disappointments & waiver adds

Sports

Week 14 was the final week of the regular season in most fantasy leagues and featured plenty of injuries and surprises. Here’s a look at the top surprises, disappointments, and waiver adds as we get ready for the fantasy playoffs.

Fantasy Football Superman took flight again, lighting up the Lions’ defense for 11 catches and 223 yards while the Vikings played catch up. He was the first overall pick in many fantasy drafts and has defended his turf with a league-leading 1,500 yards receiving.

Surprise: Jerry Jeudy, WR, Broncos

Jeudy was frustrated early in Sunday’s game but soon turned his fortunes around with eight catches for 73 yards and three touchdowns as teammate Courtland Sutton was sidelined. Unfortunately, Denver’s offensive momentum could be halted after Russell Wilson suffered a concussion.

Surprise: Jerick McKinnon, RB, Chiefs

McKinnon is mostly only relevant in deep PPR leagues, but he was the Chiefs’ top performer on Sunday with 13 touches (seven catches) for 134 yards and two touchdowns. His touchdown streaming down the sideline from Patrick Mahomes‘ underhand, no-look shovel pass could be remembered for a long time.

Surprise: Chris Moore, WR, Texans

Banged up at wideout, Houston called Moore’s number, and he answered. He led the Texans with 10 catches for 124 yards. Moore could get more work as long as Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins are out.

Surprise: Brock Purdy, QB, 49ers

Purdy impressed in relief of Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13, but there were still questions about his readiness. He answered them against the Bucs, having as great a date as the 49ers could have hoped. Purdy completed 16-of-21 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, also adding one touchdown on the ground.

Disappointment: Derek Carr, QB, Raiders

Gary A. Vasquez / USA Today Sports Images

The Raiders had an epic loss to the shorthanded Rams on Thursday Night Football, and Carr’s poor play was a big reason. He completed only 11-of-20 passes for 137 yards and two interceptions, making his performance a dud for fantasy managers.

Disappointment: Travis Etienne, RB, Jaguars

Christopher Hanewinckel / USA Today Sports Images

Jacksonville had a huge day offensively at Tennessee, but Etienne’s contribution was limited. The star running back had only 17 carries for 32 yards.

Disappointment: Tee Higgins, WR, Bengals

Katie Stratman / USA Today Sports Images

Higgins wasn’t listed on the injury report by the Bengals at the end of the week, yet he was pulled early in the game and failed to record a catch. It was an absolute catastrophe for fantasy managers in a critical week.

Disappointment: CeeDee Lamb, WR, Cowboys

Kevin Jairaj / USA Today Sports Images

Dallas barely escaped with a win vs. Houston, and Lamb was held in check. He finished with only five catches for 33 yards.

Disappointment: Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Dolphins

Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

It’s apparent Tagovailoa is in a slump, struggling in consecutive games. He completed only 10-of-28 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown against the Chargers, a defense that has struggled for much of the year.

Waiver Add: Anthony Brown, QB, Ravens

Scott Taetsch / USA Today Sports Images

The Ravens could be in trouble after No. 2 quarterback Tyler Huntley suffered a concussion. He’s questionable on a short week, and Lamar Jackson remains out with a knee injury. Brown took his first NFL snaps on Sunday, but his mobility could give him fantasy relevance if he’s forced to start in Week 15.

Waiver Add: Jauan Jennings, WR, 49ers

Cary Edmondson / USA Today Sports Images

The injury nightmares continue for San Francisco, as Deebo Samuel is now out with knee and ankle injuries. Jennings didn’t do much on Sunday, but he could have some value now that Samuel is sidelined.

Waiver Add: Baker Mayfield, QB, Rams

Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

Mayfield had an improbable performance for the Rams after being added to the roster two days earlier. He threw for 230 yards and led a game-winning drive with a passing touchdown. The weapons are now limited in LA, but Mayfield has some intrigue in the Sean McVay offense.

14 of 15

Waiver Add: Laviska Shenault, WR, Panthers

Waiver Add: Laviska Shenault, WR, Panthers

Bob Donnan / USA Today Sports Images

D.J. Moore suffered a knee injury late in Sunday’s game. The injury isn’t considered serious, but Shenault could benefit if Moore misses time. The former Jaguar had four catches for 31 yards and one rush attempt on Sunday.

15 of 15

Waiver Add: Mitchell Trubisky, QB, Steelers

Waiver Add: Mitchell Trubisky, QB, Steelers

Charles LeClaire / USA Today Sports Images

Fantasy managers probably aren’t very interested in going back to Trubisky well after he was removed from the starting role earlier this year, but he could at least be worthy of stashing after Kenny Pickett suffered a concussion. The Steelers face off against Carolina in Week 15.
