Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Agency says a number of new eco-friendly policies will be launched on January 1, 2023. These policies include launching rentable reusable cups and providing subsidies for converting vehicles and household electronics to be more environmentally friendly.

Five percent of convenience stores and fast food chains will need to provide rentable reusable cups. Customers can pay a deposit and rent cups at stores to reduce single-use products. They will then need to return the cups within three days. Customers who use these cups will also receive a NT$5 discount.

Another new policy is a NT$15,000 (~US$500) subsidy for converting diesel-powered cars into electric cars. Users can apply for this subsidy if they have a diesel engine car manufactured more than 10 years ago.

Existing subsidies for electric motorcycle purchases will also be extended for four more years. The subsidy amount can total up to NT$10,000 (US$325) depending on the size of the motorcycle and whether it uses Taiwan-made batteries.

A NT$3000 (~US$100) will also be available for converting old household electronics into more energy-efficient versions of the products. This includes refrigerators and air conditioners. In addition to the subsidy, a NT$2000 (US$65) tax deduction will also be offered.
