Nearly 8% of the Ocean Is Now Protected

Our oceans face multiple threats – rising temperatures, agricultural run-off, overfishing and plastic pollution. But the good news is that more and more of the planet’s seas are being designated as protected areas, where marine ecosystems can thrive with minimal disruption.

Nearly 17,000 different protected areas now collectively cover 28 million square kilometres. That’s a ten-fold increase since 2000.
