Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t 100 percent heading into Super Bowl LVII. He injured his ankle in the divisional round against the Jacksonville Jaguars and has been working hard to get as close to perfect as possible ahead of potentially the second-biggest game of his life.
While no team wants their quarterback ailing heading into the “game of games,” it is worth noting that Mahomes seems to think he’s “definitely in a better spot,” per ESPN.
“You won’t know exactly how it is until you get to game day,” he explained. “I mean, I definitely move around better than I was moving last week or two weeks ago. So, it’s just trying to continue to get the treatment and the rehab and get it as close to 100% and then rely on some adrenaline to let me do a little bit extra when I’m on the field.”
Mahomes was noticeably hobbled in the AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he still put together a legendary performance, completing 29-of-43 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns.
He may not have had his usual mobility and escape ability, but he still made plays when the Chiefs needed him to most. With two weeks of rest between that game and the Super Bowl matchup with the Eagles, one imagines he’ll look even better on the ankle.
“He’s been doing really well with his ankle,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told the media. “We had a fast practice a couple days ago and he moved well. He can really do just about everything — at least everything in the game plan we asked him to do.”
