Ireland: Minister for Justice Launches €4 Million Community Safety Fund 2025

World

The Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, has formally opened applications for the Community Safety Fund 2025, announcing an expanded allocation of €4 million to support local initiatives aimed at reducing crime and strengthening community resilience. The launch took place during his visit to Ballymun Garda Station and the Ballymun Implementation Board in Dublin.

Purpose of the Fund

The Community Safety Fund channels the proceeds of crime seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) and An Garda Síochána directly back into communities. Grants ranging from €20,000 to €150,000 will be available to projects that enhance safety, reduce reoffending, and divert vulnerable individuals away from criminal behaviour.

Minister’s Statement

Minister O’Callaghan described the fund as a “tangible link between law enforcement and building stronger, safer communities.” He noted that Budget 2025 doubled the allocation compared to the fund’s launch in 2022, reflecting government commitment to community‑driven safety initiatives.

Administration and Priorities

The fund will be managed by the National Office for Community Safety within the Department of Justice. Applications are open for six weeks, closing on Friday, 16 May 2025. Eligible applicants include community organisations, NGOs, local authorities, and consortia with innovative approaches to safety and youth justice.

Projects funded in 2024 addressed issues such as anti‑social behaviour, domestic violence, drug‑related intimidation, social exclusion, youth programmes, and prison post‑release support. Many initiatives focused on education, sport, and recreation as proactive tools to improve safety and cohesion.

Outlook

By reinvesting criminal proceeds into local projects, the Community Safety Fund aims to reduce fear of crime, foster safe and resilient communities, and share best practice nationwide. Minister O’Callaghan encouraged groups to apply, stressing that community participation is crucial to people feeling safe and protected.
