Minister for Finance and President of the Eurogroup, Paschal Donohoe TD, has welcomed Ireland’s formal membership of the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics, marking a significant step in the country’s strategic engagement with European policy and global affairs.
The Brussels Institute for Geopolitics is the first think tank in the EU capital solely dedicated to geopolitics and strategy. It brings together leaders from public policy, business, and civil society to cultivate a strategic culture within the European Union. Ireland becomes the tenth EU state member of the Institute.
“I am pleased that Ireland has joined the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics as an original state member,” Minister Donohoe said. “At a time of increasing global uncertainty, it is vital that we, as Europeans, are attuned to our past and engage critically with the ideas and trends that will shape our future.”
Looking ahead to Ireland’s EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2026, Donohoe noted that Ireland will contribute a distinctive perspective to the Institute’s work—grounded in multilateralism, a strong sensitivity to global injustice, and a forward-looking approach to innovation and regulation.
Institute Director Luuk van Middelaar welcomed Ireland’s membership, stating, “We are very much looking forward to hearing distinct Irish voices on how to navigate geopolitical currents. Their commitment and active participation will provide a unique European vantage point to the work of the Institute.”
Ireland’s membership signals a deepening of its role in shaping strategic dialogue across Europe, reinforcing its commitment to collaborative policymaking in an increasingly complex global landscape.
