The National Center for Prevention of Torture supports the initiative of MP Dastan Bekeshev to make amendments and changes to the Criminal Procedure Code, which provide for restrictions on the use of a preventive measure in the form of detention for elderly people and pregnant women. Organization’s statement says.

Human rights activists agree that the conditions in pre-trial detention centers do not meet international standards and detention in a pre-trial detention center can be equated with torture.

The center considers justified the proposals that detention should not be applied to women over 55 years old, men over 60 years old and pregnant women, with the exception of cases when they can hide from the investigating authorities and the court, as well as when they are suspected of committing a particularly serious crime.
