House committee meets AHRC delegation over human rights cooperation | Jordan News

Ammon News – Chairman of the Lower House Public Freedoms and Human Rights Committee, MP Bassam Fayez, said Jordan is taking “steady” steps to further empower human rights, freedoms and best practices under Royal efforts.

During the committee’s meeting on Wednesday, with a delegation from Arab Human Rights Committee (AHRC), Jaber Saleh Al Marri, Fayez said Jordan was the first Arab country to join Arab Charter on Human Rights (ACHR), and the first nation to submit its first human rights report.

Fayez briefed the delegation on the committee’s tasks based on two legislative and the supervisory axes.

The House committee is working with various civil society organizations to monitor irregularities affecting Jordanians’ rights and freedoms and examine complaints and grievances related to violations of human rights and public freedoms, Fayez pointed out.

The committee, he noted, is working to launch a hotline service to receive citizens’ human rights complaints.

Regarding the legislative aspect, Fayez said Jordan has improved human rights and freedoms laws by aligning its legislation with the contents of all international agreements ratified by the Kingdom and enacted a set of legislations that contributed to improving Jordan’s freedoms state.

For their part, Al-Marri and his accompanying delegation lauded the House committee’s efforts in improving the Kingdom’s freedoms performance indicators.

The delegates also commended Jordan’s education level and its development His Majesty King Abdullah II’s leadership, noting that Jordan has received many refugees and allocated schools to complete their learning.

In addition, the delegation noted Jordan is making progress towards empowering women in various fields, especially parliamentary areas, hailing the Kingdom’s constitutional amendments, party and election laws, and reducing the candidacy age to Parliament to 25 years.
