This 2-part primer introduces mining’s role in powering global industries and sets the South African context. Mining contributes around 7% of gross domestic product and supports more than 450,000 jobs, underpinned by large platinum group metal reserves and strong positions in gold, manganese, coal and vanadium.
The first report summarise the full value chain from exploration to closure, outlines typical timelines across a 20 to 50‑year asset life, and describes common mining methods and the main steps from drilling and blasting through to concentration and refining.
It highlights headline challenges such as energy supply, labour relations, policy uncertainty and meeting environmental, social and governance expectations. The report closes with the principles of closure and rehabilitation, showing how operators plan early, restore land and biodiversity, and repurpose sites where possible.
The second part outlines the historic performance of the South African mining sector and gives a brief industry outlook for several key base/bulk, precious and specialty materials. Furthermore, structural challenges affecting the performance of and investment in the sector are described and strategic commodities for long-term investment and portfolio planning are listed.
