Dive Brief:

  • Tire company Goodyear is turning to technology to enhance safety and data visibility, incorporating sensor technology into its tires.
  • The sensors, powered by cloud-based algorithms, send data to fleet operators in real time, the company announced Wednesday.
  • “This is another step to evolve the tire to not only deliver its core, traditional job but also be a nexus of new data and information,” said Chris Helsel, Goodyear’s SVP, global operations and CTO, in the statement.

Dive Insight:

Data provides businesses with insights to inform decision-making. enhance operations, improve experiences and increase safety.

Unlocking new data streams is like hitting the jackpot, provided companies follow two rules of thumb, according to Pedro Pacheco, VP of research in Gartner’s CIO Research Group:

  • Investment in sensors is key in order to get more and better data. Go beyond trying to do the best with the data that you already have.
  • Most of data’s value is in indirect rather than direct monetization. Meaning, don’t waste time and effort trying to sell data. Instead, use data insights to deliver value-enhancing services to customers.

Goodyear equipped short-haul logistics company Gatik with the intelligent tires to demonstrate, in proof of concept, the tires’ new capabilities.

The partnership between Goodyear and Gatik started in September 2022. It allows Goodyear access to Gatik’s enterprise clients, such as Walmart, KBX and Georgia-Pacific.

In addition to enhancing safety, the data solution brings intelligent tires and the increased data visibility to the enterprise level and could be used as a cost saver.

“Much like smart watches that monitor vitals like heart rates and oxygen levels, Goodyear SightLine’s tire intelligence monitors the health of a tire,” said Chris Helsel, SVP, global operations and CTO, in a June announcement. “Goodyear SightLine takes the mystery out of understanding tires and provides proactive mobility insights to communicate when tires need service or replacement.”
