Basketball is traditionally broken up into five different positions, which are often determined based on a player”s size and skills. However, positions may differ and be simplified at younger ages.

 

 


Point Guard

The point guard is almost always one of the best ball handlers on the team, and is usually the one that starts with the ball every time their team goes on offense. 


Shooting Guard

The shooting guard, like the point guard, is typically a good ball handler, but their main strength, as the name suggests, is shooting.


Small Forward

Small Forward

The small forward is typically the most versatile position on the floor. They must be able to dribble, pass, shoot, drive to the basket, and play defense.


Power Forward

Power Forward

The power forward usually plays under the basket, focusing on rebounds and attempting shots 10-15 feet away from the basket.


Center

Center

The center is almost always the tallest player on the floor, and usually plays right under the basket. They specialize in gathering rebounds, contesting shots, and setting screens.
