Future Circular Collider (FCC)

The first phase of Europe’s huge new atom smasher the Future Circular Collider (FCC), could be completed after 20 years.

Large Hadron Collider (LHC) played a crucial role in completing the puzzle of the Standard Model by discovering the elusive Higgs Boson particle.

Over the past few decades, particle colliders like the LHC have become essential tools for understanding the fundamental aspects of the universe.

Now, plans are underway to build a huge collider, three times the size of the LHC, capable of smashing particles together with much higher energy.

To further this understanding, there are discussions about increasing the number of collisions at the LHC and even constructing a new collider. The Future Circular Collider (FCC) project is exploring designs for a massive collider housed within a 100-kilometer underground tunnel, promising to propel high-energy physics research into the next century.

However, building such a colossal infrastructure comes with its challenges. Finding the right location for the tunnel is quite a task.

CERN is exploring various layout options to minimize the impact on the surrounding environment, ensuring efficiency, and connectivity with the existing LHC, and addressing social and environmental concerns.
