Penny for your thoughts, Philadelphia. While not many believed Miles Sanders would be back with the team next year, nobody thought he’d be replaced by Rashaad Penny.
After five seasons in Seattle, Penny has agreed to a contract, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport.
The Seahawks had high hopes for Penny when they took him with the 27th overall pick in 2018, but the oft-injured running back could never live up to the hype. After missing just two games as a rookie, injuries have limited Penny to 28 games since then and just five in 2022.
Penny’s best year came in 2021. After missing six games with an assortment of leg injuries earlier in the year, he led the NFL in rushing yards over the final six weeks of the season, finishing the season with 749 yards and six touchdowns.
Last year, a broken leg against New Orleans in Week 5 ended Penny’s season early and created an opportunity for second-round pick Kenneth Walker III to take over.
The former Michigan State Spartan didn’t disappoint. Even with the late start, Walker III rushed for 1,050 yards and nine touchdowns, leaving Seattle no choice but to move on from Penny.
Meanwhile, Sanders’ 2022 season was the best of his career with 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns. But with an expected two-year, $14 million price tag, most assumed the Eagles would look elsewhere.
Terms of Penny’s contract can’t be announced until free agency officially begins on Wednesday, but Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia believes it’s a one-year deal.
Penny signed a one-year, $5.75 million deal with the Seahawks last offseason, and with his recent leg injury, it’s safe to assume the Eagles are getting him for much less. If he can stay healthy, Penny could be worth it.
