Once expected to compete for a starting job in 2023, Traeshon Holden’s time with the Oregon Ducks appears to be over before it started following the wideout’s arrest Wednesday, only months after transferring from Alabama.
According to a report from on3.com’s Jarrid Denney, Holden was arrested Wednesday morning and is facing charges of menacing, unlawful use of a weapon and coercion.
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning acted swiftly, confirming that Holden had been kicked off the team in a statement from the school’s athletic department via Denny.
“We are aware of the incident involving Traeshon Holden, and he has been dismissed from our team,” Lanning said. “We have high standards for the student-athletes, coaches, and staff in our football program, and we are disappointed when these standards are not met. We will continue to hold everyone in our program accountable for meeting our expectations.”
Holden spent three seasons with Alabama before entering the transfer portal late last year. He officially committed to Oregon on Dec. 11.
Last season for Alabama, Holden’s junior year, he averaged 13.2 yards per catch and hauled in 25 receptions for 331 yards and six touchdowns, all career-highs. Over 21 career games with the Crimson Tide, Holden recorded 46 catches for 570 yards and seven scores.
It’s an unfortunate turn of events for Holden and Oregon, and there are no winners here. The Ducks now have a hole at wide receiver, and Holden’s career is on hold for the foreseeable future as he deals with a serious situation away from the football field.
