Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič is in Geneva today to participate in the launch of the UN’s 2024 Global Humanitarian Overview.

The focus of the event is on ‘People at the Center of Humanitarian Action in the Context of the Climate Crisis’. There, Commissioner Lenarčič will reiterate the call for broadening the donor base and ensuring respect of international humanitarian law.

Organised by the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Global Humanitarian Overview is the annual overview of humanitarian trends and needs worldwide, and interagency plans to respond to crises.

OCHA’s assessment of the current humanitarian situation globally shows 299.4 million people will require humanitarian assistance and protection in 2024.

The funding required for meeting these needs is estimated by OCHA to be $46 billion – at a time when the gap between humanitarian needs and available resources continues to grow.
