Call to Action by the National Union of Students (NUS): Raise the EMA for Students to Match Rising Costs

World

For over a decade, the Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) has provided crucial financial support to young students from low-income families in the UK and Northern Ireland. However, while the cost of living—including food, transportation, books, and other essentials—has soared, EMA payments have remained stagnant. The National Union of Students (NUS) is calling on policymakers to step up and adjust EMA to reflect today’s economic reality. Support Students, Increase EMA! – NUS-USI

Currently, students aged 16 to 19 who attend full-time courses are eligible for a weekly allowance of £30. While this sum was significant when EMA was first introduced, the rising costs of living have rendered it insufficient for many students struggling to cover basic expenses. With inflation outpacing the allowance, many young people find it increasingly difficult to continue their education without additional support.

The NUS has launched a campaign urging the Economy Minister to:

  1. Increase EMA payments to match the current inflation rate.
  2. Expand eligibility to ensure that more students facing financial hardship can access the allowance.
  3. Review and enhance the EMA Bonus Payment to guarantee that it reaches every student as an essential maintenance support. Support Students, Increase EMA! – NUS-USI

The NUS is rallying students and supporters across the country to join in advocating for a change that will ensure future generations are not left behind. For further information and to show your support, visit the NUS petition: Support Students, Increase EMA.

It’s time for policymakers to listen and act. The future of students in the UK and Northern Ireland depends on it.
