EUROPE — Tourists planning autumn travel across southern Europe should brace for widespread disruptions as coordinated strike actions unfold in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. The industrial unrest, involving air traffic controllers, baggage handlers, and airport staff, is expected to cause delays, cancellations, and logistical challenges throughout September and October.
In Italy, strikes began on September 6, affecting airports in Catania, Milan, Pisa, and Florence. Additional walkouts are scheduled for September 26 at Milan Malpensa and Cagliari Elmas, impacting both domestic and international flights.
France faces a major air traffic control strike from September 18–19, which could disrupt flights across the continent due to the high volume of traffic routed through French airspace. Broader transport strikes linked to national budget protests may also affect trains and buses.
In Spain, baggage handlers from Azul Handling—serving Ryanair—are staging regular strikes every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through the end of 2025. Key airports including Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, and Ibiza are expected to experience delays in ground services.
Portugal is contending with rolling strikes by ground staff from Menzies Aviation, with walkouts planned throughout September and into November. Lisbon, Porto, Faro, and Madeira airports are among those affected, with disruptions expected in check-in, boarding, and baggage handling.
Travelers are advised to monitor airline updates, confirm flight statuses, and allow extra time for airport procedures. While autumn typically offers a quieter and more affordable travel experience, ongoing labor disputes may complicate itineraries across popular European destinations.
