Background
Sankore is a new £1.9 million Accountable Grant delivery mechanism that will strengthen innovation systems in Nigeria and Ghana. It will strengthen research commercialisation, innovation policy and support innovation system projects that align with national and regional priorities for science, technology and innovation.
Named after a historical place of learning in West Africa, Sankore will be delivered under the Africa Technology and Innovation Partnerships (ATIP) programme.
What the fund will achieve
In alignment with the Africa Technology and Innovation Partnerships (ATIP) programme scope, Sankore will:
- Strengthen research commercialisation in West Africa through industry-academia partnership.
- Support the implementation of UK-Ghana Science, Technology and Innovation strategy in collaboration with Government of Ghana – including support to the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) to deliver the Government of Ghana commitment to allocate 0.5 GNI to research and development (R&D).
- Strengthen technology and innovation policy and regulation in Nigeria to unlock innovation at the national and regional level.
- Provide technical assistance to government in Nigeria and Ghana to improve government digital service delivery.
Requirements for organisations wishing to apply
FCDO invites interested organisations to attend our early market engagement webinar for Sankore.
We are seeking interest from organisations that meet these requirements:
- A lead implementing partner with the capacity to engage and coordinate a diverse range of subcontractors and downstream partners.
- A lead implementing partner that is a non-profit organisation based in Ghana or Nigeria and have deep understanding of local context.
- Demonstrable experience working with public and private sector stakeholders for innovation systems strengthening and national policy influencing in Ghana and Nigeria.
