Minister McEntee Unveils €90m Climate Action Summer Works Scheme for Schools

World

Dublin, 18 November 2025 — Minister for Education and Youth Helen McEntee has announced a €90 million investment under the 2026 Climate Action Summer Works Scheme, approving 297 projects nationwide to modernise school facilities and advance sustainability goals.

Major Boost for Science Laboratories

A central feature of the scheme is the refurbishment of science laboratories in 60 post‑primary schools. €30 million has been ring‑fenced for these upgrades, supporting the Department’s curricular redevelopment programme and the rollout of a new Leaving Certificate curriculum focused on equipping students with future‑ready skills.

Scope of Approved Projects

  • 198 projects under the new Climate Action Summer Works Scheme, spanning lab upgrades, roof works, electrical and mechanical improvements, window replacements, energy‑efficiency measures, and essential maintenance.
  • 99 projects carried over from the previous Summer Works Scheme, ensuring completion of all outstanding commitments.

The scheme places strong emphasis on sustainability, enabling schools to implement insulation upgrades, LED lighting, EV charging points, and bike rack facilities to encourage active travel alongside traditional maintenance works.

Nationwide Impact

Projects have been prioritised across 26 counties, with procurement expected to take place predominantly during summer 2026. Schools will be notified individually on next steps for delivery.

Minister’s Statement

Minister McEntee described the initiative as “a key part of my Education Plan to deliver a world‑class education system which tackles disadvantage and ensures every child can achieve their full potential.” She highlighted the annual approval process as part of the Department’s National Development Plan 2026–2030, aligning with commitments in the Programme for Government.

Climate Action Integration

Schools benefiting from the scheme are required to register with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and report annual energy use, reinforcing the Government’s Climate Action Plan and ensuring accountability for sustainability measures.
