The Elders, a group of former world leaders and Nobel laureates founded by Nelson Mandela, have called for the immediate release of Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti from Israeli prison, describing it as a crucial step toward reviving a viable two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In a statement issued on 29 October 2025, the group urged President Donald Trump to press for Barghouti’s release, arguing that the fragile ceasefire in Gaza presents a rare opportunity to advance peace efforts. While the truce has provided temporary relief, The Elders condemned Israel’s latest strikes on Gaza City as a “flagrant violation” of the deal and criticized the continued obstruction of humanitarian aid.
Barghouti, often referred to by Palestinians as “their Mandela”, has been imprisoned since 2002 and is serving multiple life sentences following a 2004 trial that the Inter-Parliamentary Union deemed unfair and in breach of international law. Despite his incarceration, he remains one of the most popular Palestinian leaders in opinion polls, widely regarded as a unifying figure who has consistently advocated for a peaceful two-state solution while condemning attacks on civilians.
The Elders stressed that Palestinians alone have the right to choose their leadership, welcoming President Mahmoud Abbas’s pledge to hold internationally monitored elections within the next year. They also condemned reports of ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian prisoners, urging Israel to uphold its obligations under international law.
The statement highlighted that several Israeli political and security figures, including a former head of the Shin Bet internal security agency, have expressed support for Barghouti’s release, recognizing the potential role he could play in advancing peace, dignity, and security for both peoples.
“Freeing him now would send a signal that Israel is serious about pursuing a peaceful, political path to resolve the conflict,” the group said, recalling that Archbishop Desmond Tutu first called for Barghouti’s release in 2013.
The Elders’ appeal comes amid mounting international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the broader stagnation of peace talks. They urged world leaders to seize the moment to increase the chances of lasting peace, accountability, and security in the region.
