18 September 2025 — Marking World Patient Safety Day, global health leaders turned attention to the unique vulnerabilities of children in medical settings. With an estimated 1 in 10 patients harmed during care and over 3 million deaths annually linked to unsafe practices, the call for reform is urgent.

This year’s theme—patient safety for children—underscores the need for age-appropriate, developmentally tailored healthcare. Experts stress that children are not simply smaller adults; they require care that reflects their physical, emotional, and social needs.

Common risks to child patients include medication and diagnostic errors, hospital-acquired infections, surgical complications, and missed signs of deterioration. These issues are often preventable through improved clinical systems, better training for health workers, and active involvement of families.

The message is clear: no one should be harmed while seeking care, especially the youngest and most vulnerable.
