📍 South Boston, Virginia, 5 September 2025 — Hitachi Energy, a subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd., has unveiled a landmark $1 billion investment to expand production of critical electrical grid components across the United States. The initiative includes $457 million dedicated to building a large power transformer facility in South Boston, Virginia—the largest of its kind in the country.
The investment aims to meet surging demand for high-voltage infrastructure driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centers and domestic manufacturing. It aligns with the Trump administration’s AI Action Plan and broader energy dominance agenda, which promotes onshoring and grid modernization.
The Virginia facility will manufacture large-scale transformers essential for transmitting electricity over long distances. These components are vital to strengthening grid resilience and supporting the U.S. transition to a more electrified economy.
Hitachi’s move is expected to create thousands of high-paying jobs and bolster local supply chains. Additional expansions are planned at existing sites nationwide, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable energy infrastructure.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright praised the announcement, stating, “If we are going to win the AI race and keep the lights on, America needs reliable energy. Hitachi is delivering.”
