π 5 September 2025 β A major cybersecurity breach has exposed over 252 million identity records from seven countries, including Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, South Africa, and Canada. The leak originated from three misconfigured servers located in Brazil and the UAE, which left sensitive personal data publicly accessible.
The compromised records included government-level identity profiles containing ID numbers, birth dates, contact details, and residential addresses. Cybersecurity researchers at Cybernews, who discovered the breach, noted that the databases shared similar structures and naming conventions, suggesting they may have been operated by a single entity. However, the exact source remains unidentified.
Turkey, Egypt, and South Africa were reportedly the most severely impacted, with full-spectrum identity details leaked. Experts warn that the exposed data could be exploited for identity theft, financial fraud, and targeted phishing attacks.
Following notification from researchers, hosting providers have secured the servers, and the data is no longer accessible as of June 2025.
