An 11-year-old boy was fatally shot in Houston, Texas, on Saturday night after participating in a doorbell-ringing prank commonly known as “ding dong ditch,” according to local police.

The incident occurred in the city’s southeast around 11:00 p.m., when the child rang a doorbell and ran away with friends. A witness reported that the boy was fleeing from a residence when he was struck by gunfire. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Houston Police Department spokesperson Shay Awosiyan confirmed that one individual was detained for questioning but no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.

The case has drawn comparisons to other recent incidents across the U.S. where similar pranks have led to fatal outcomes, raising concerns about the risks associated with viral social media challenges and the use of firearms in residential settings.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and restraint, emphasizing that such pranks, while seemingly harmless, can escalate into tragic confrontations.
