Three people were killed and five others injured after protesters set fire to a regional parliament building in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, authorities confirmed on Saturday. The incident occurred Friday evening during escalating demonstrations that have spread across major cities.
According to officials, the victims were trapped inside the burning building, while two of the injured sustained injuries after jumping from upper floors. The fire has since been extinguished.
The unrest follows public outrage over the death of a motorcycle taxi driver, reportedly struck by a police armored vehicle during earlier protests in Jakarta. Demonstrations have intensified over perceived government excesses and police conduct.
President Prabowo Subianto, who assumed office less than a year ago, has called for calm and pledged a full investigation. The protests mark the first major challenge to his administration.
