WASHINGTON — Doug Beck, director of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), resigned on Monday, marking the latest high-level departure from the Pentagon amid ongoing leadership changes. Beck’s exit follows reported tensions between senior defense officials and the Trump administration over political alignment and strategic priorities.

Beck, a former Apple executive and Navy Reserve officer, led the DIU since 2023, overseeing efforts to integrate emerging technologies—such as autonomous systems and artificial intelligence—into U.S. military operations. His departure comes at a critical moment for the unit, which plays a key role in modernizing defense capabilities through partnerships with Silicon Valley startups.

While Beck did not publicly cite a reason for stepping down, sources familiar with the matter noted prior concerns within the Department of Defense regarding his political affiliations and past donations. The DIU has confirmed a leadership transition is underway, with oversight shifting to Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael.

Beck’s resignation follows a series of recent Pentagon shakeups, including the removal of several senior military officials by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The changes reflect broader shifts in defense policy and personnel under the current administration.
