CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Marquis Drakeford Bynum, 45, of Charlotte, has been sentenced to 144 months in federal prison for possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) involving a prepubescent minor and for violating the terms of his federal supervised release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina announced today.
U.S. District Judge Max O. Cogburn Jr. also ordered Bynum to serve a lifetime of supervised release following his prison term, register as a sex offender, and pay $33,000 in restitution.
The case stemmed from Bynum’s violation of conditions imposed after his 2007 federal conviction for transporting and possessing CSAM. On August 16, 2023, during a compliance search of his residence, the U.S. Probation Office (USPO) recovered two mobile phones and a flash drive. A forensic examination conducted by the USPO and the FBI revealed thousands of images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children, including toddlers.
Bynum was charged federally and pleaded guilty on April 10, 2024, to possession of child pornography involving minors under the age of 12. He remains in federal custody and will be transferred to the Bureau of Prisons once a facility is designated.
U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson and FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge James C. Barnacle, Jr. acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the FBI and USPO in the successful prosecution. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimlani Ford led the case for the government.
This case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. More information is available at justice.gov/psc.
