BUCHAREST – On Monday, the Romanian Parliament overwhelmingly confirmed Ilie Bolojan as the country’s new Prime Minister, with a vote of 301 in favor and only 9 opposed. Bolojan, a senior figure in the National Liberal Party (PNL), will head a broad governing coalition comprising the PNL, the Save Romania Union (USR), the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), and the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
The PSD, the largest party in the coalition, initially resisted Bolojan’s nomination but ultimately supported him after securing a power-sharing agreement. Under the terms of the deal, Bolojan has agreed to resign in 2027, allowing a PSD nominee to assume the premiership for the remainder of the term.
Bolojan’s confirmation marks a new phase in Romanian politics, as the coalition seeks to deliver political stability and economic reforms ahead of the 2028 general elections. His appointment follows weeks of negotiations amid growing public demand for effective governance and institutional reform.
