Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Near Gorontalo, Indonesia

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred on May 3, 2025, at 19:51 WIB (12:51 UTC), northwest of Pohuwato in Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the epicenter at a depth of 90 km, while the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a depth of 108.4 km. The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 130 km southwest of Gorontalo City and 243 km northeast of Palu.

The earthquake was felt across a wide area. According to the USGS, over 1.9 million people experienced weak shaking, and more than 1.3 million felt light shaking. Local media reported weak shaking in Boalemo and Pohuwato, with light shaking extending to areas including North Gorontalo, Manado, Tarakan, and parts of Palu.

BMKG’s analysis indicated that the earthquake resulted from a horizontally shifting thrust fault mechanism. Despite the moderate magnitude, there have been no reports of significant damage or casualties. The USGS issued a Green alert, suggesting a low likelihood of fatalities and economic losses. Additionally, there is no tsunami threat associated with this earthquake.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation for potential aftershocks and encourage residents to stay informed through official channels.
