UN Urges Protection of Civilians following Escalating Violence in North Darfur

World

The humanitarian crisis in North Darfur has intensified, with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, calling for immediate protection of civilians as violence escalates in and around El Fasher. Since April 10, attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have resulted in the deaths of at least 481 civilians, including humanitarian workers, and have led to a surge in sexual violence cases, particularly affecting women, girls, and boys attempting to flee the conflict .

The RSF’s offensive has disrupted essential services, with water sources being cut off and medical personnel facing severe attacks. The UN has emphasized the need for both warring parties to allow civilians to leave conflict zones and to ensure their safety, in line with international humanitarian law .

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has led to widespread displacement and a humanitarian disaster. The UN reports that over 8 million people have been displaced, with nearly 18 million facing acute food insecurity, including 14 million children .

The international community has condemned the violence, with the United Nations Security Council adopting Resolution 2736 in June 2024, demanding the cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians in North Darfur . However, despite these efforts, the situation remains dire, and urgent action is needed to prevent further loss of life and to address the humanitarian needs of the affected populations.

The UN continues to call for unimpeded humanitarian access and for all parties to the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law to safeguard the lives and dignity of civilians caught in the crossfire.
