Tánaiste Welcomes Arab Plan for Gaza’s Reconstruction, Calls for Political Framework

Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) of Ireland, Micheál Martin, has expressed strong support for the Arab Plan for the Reconstruction of Gaza, emphasizing the need for a sustainable, politically and securely grounded approach to rebuilding the region. In a statement released by Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs on March 13, 2025, Martin welcomed the comprehensive plan put forward by Arab countries, noting that it offers a viable path to Gaza’s recovery, but stresses that this must be accompanied by a solid political framework that ensures long-term peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis.

“Ireland has consistently emphasized that the governance of Gaza must include the Palestinian Authority,” Martin stated. The plan, according to Martin, underscores the importance of Palestinian ownership in the reconstruction efforts, reaffirming that Palestinians’ rights and their ability to live in Gaza must be respected. He further highlighted Ireland’s and the EU’s stance against forced displacement or occupation in Gaza.

Martin stressed that the successful implementation of the Arab plan would require strong international cooperation, particularly from Arab countries and global partners, with financial support being crucial. He welcomed the positive involvement of Arab nations but called on the EU and Ireland to also respond proactively to the opportunity to assist in Gaza’s rebuilding process.

A key prerequisite, according to Martin, is the continuation of the ceasefire and the release of hostages. Immediate resumption of humanitarian aid to Gaza is critical, and any further escalation of violence must be avoided.

Looking ahead, Martin stated that a political pathway must be established to ensure governments and donors can confidently make the necessary commitments for reconstruction. Ireland, along with European and regional partners, will work closely to support this initiative, moving forward.

This initiative marks a significant step towards rebuilding Gaza and is a critical moment in the pursuit of lasting peace in the region.
