World

On the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine which takes place on the 24th of Feb 2025, Ireland’s Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister), Micheál Martin, issued a statement reaffirming the country’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine. Reflecting on the brutal conflict, Martin expressed admiration for the resilience and bravery of the Ukrainian people, who continue to fight for their sovereignty and uphold universal values.

“The people of Ukraine have shown incredible courage in the face of unimaginable adversity,” Martin stated, emphasizing that Ireland’s support for Ukraine has been steadfast both bilaterally and at the EU level. This support has included humanitarian aid, stabilisation efforts, non-lethal military assistance, and strong political backing, particularly for Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union.

In his statement, Martin highlighted the importance of global solidarity, noting that Russia’s aggression poses a direct threat to all of Europe, not just Ukraine. Ireland, alongside its EU partners, remains focused on securing a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace on Ukraine’s terms, based on respect for the UN Charter and international law.

“We recognise that supporting Ukraine is not optional—it is necessary. Ireland stands with Ukraine, now and for as long as it takes,” Martin affirmed, underlining Ireland’s commitment to justice and accountability in the conflict’s resolution.

As the war continues to devastate Ukraine, Ireland’s resolute position reflects its dedication to both humanitarian principles and European security.
